Santiago de Cuba – October 2012
I was staying at Brisas Sierra Mar (near Santiago de Cuba) in late October 2012 when Hurricane Sandy was approaching the south coast of Cuba. We were all evacuated to a the Melia Santiago hotel. Next day I took photos of the damage.
The damage was extensive across the city, there were many damaged vehicles and roofs ripped off houses. The army was called in to help clean up the mess. All the palm trees had lost their tops. Local residents all helped with the clean up. Many homes and businesses were without power. Communications were cut-off, telephone lines were lying in the streets, there was no cellular signal available. Hotels in the area were severely damaged, The Bucanero Hotel was closed permanently. Hurricane Sandy caused extensive coastal flooding and wind damage in southern Cuba, 15,000 homes were destroyed, 11 Cubans were killed and caused $2 billion dollars damage. Hurricane Sandy later became known as super-storm Sandy when it reached the coast of the United States. Click on the photos below to enlarge….
