Costa Rica is a vast area in Central America located south of Honduras and north of Panama and stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean in the west. Christopher Columbus discovered this land in 1502. He claimed the new land for Spain. Costa Rica gained its independence from Spain in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence. After the Costa Rican Cival War in 1948 a new democracy was created, the military was dismantled. Today Costa Rica is a tourist attraction that has much to offer.

Tourism in Costa Rica is in full swing, there are many tourist destinations within Costa Rica. There are many beaches in Costa Rica, both on the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. Manuel Antonio National Park is famous for its beaches. The park is located on the Pacific side. In addition to the beaches, there are many active volcanoes to visit, such as Poas and Arenal. Costa Rica is famous for its ecotourism, hiking, flora, fauna and bird watching.

Cruise ships have a port of call at Punarenas. You can drive south from Puntarenas and visit the area of Jaco Beach. There are many hotels there and places to eat. The local shrimp is delicious. If you continue south, you will reach Manuel Antonio National Park. There are also many hotels there and excellent restaurants.

In the central part of Costa Rica is the mountainous region. There you can visit the volcanoes as well as many coffee plantations. Don’t forget the Butterfly Museum near San Jose, it is well worth a side trip.
